October Family Bucket List

Fall is here, and with it comes a season of cozy sweaters, colorful leaves, and pumpkin-flavored everything! To make this October extra special for your little ones, we've put together a fun-filled bucket list full of ideas for your family to try together!

1. Donate to a Charity or Volunteer: Here at RCA, we're hosting a blanket drive all month long to benefit Free Haven Outreach in Commerce, Georgia. Your child can help by bringing in a new unused blanket. Additionally, if you're interested in volunteering your time, there are opportunities available at Free Haven Outreach.

2. Visit a Pumpkin Patch: Visiting a pumpkin patch in the fall is a quintessential autumnal experience. It's a perfect opportunity to pick out the perfect pumpkin for carving or decorating. Visit Washington Farms, a local favorite, for a day of fall fun! You'll find plenty of pumpkins to pick, a thrilling corn maze, and other exciting activities, too!

3. Bake a Pumpkin Pie: Pumpkin bread is a classic fall treat that warms the soul and satisfies the taste buds. The rich, moist texture combined with the subtle sweetness of pumpkin and comforting spices make it a beloved dessert. Whether enjoyed for breakfast, a snack, or as a delightful dessert, pumpkin bread is a favorite fall flavor that never disappoints. Whip up a batch of our favorite pumpkin bread, courtesy of our owner and Director of Nutrition, Mrs. Tina. This recipe is sure to become a family favorite!

4. Decorate Your Home: Turn your home into a cozy fall nest! Add colorful leaves, pumpkins, and pinecones to make it feel like autumn is here. Light some candles and hang pretty lights to make it feel warm and cozy. Get into the fall spirit by decorating your home with your child's adorable fall-themed artwork that we'll be sending home throughout the season for you to display!

5. Enjoy Nature's Beauty: Fall is the perfect time to hike in Northeast Georgia and see the beautiful fall colors. Hurricane Shoals Park is a great local spot for families with trails, picnic areas, and more! The Hurricane Shoals Nature Trail is a gentle 2-mile hike that’s easy for young kids to handle. It winds through the woods and along the river, giving everyone a chance to enjoy the fresh air and scenery.

6. Experience Fall Festivals: Fall festivals are a great way to experience the beauty and fun of the season. Don't miss the Hoschton Fall Festival (October 4th-6th) and Watkinsville's 50th Annual Fall Festival (October 19th). These events offer a variety of activities for the whole family, including live music, delicious food, and fun games. It's a perfect opportunity to spend quality time with loved ones and create lasting memories.

7. Cozy Up with a Fall Scent: Bring the cozy charm of fall into your home with a Rekindle fall candle. This local Monroe, Georgia business crafts a delightful assortment of scented candles that will fill your space with warm and inviting aromas. Check out their new Fall Collection, which includes some returning favorites along with a new scent: Orange Peel + Cardamom.

8. Cheer on the Dawgs: College football is a beloved fall tradition in the South, and there's no better way to experience the excitement than by attending a University of Georgia football game. Cheer on the Bulldogs as they take the field and feel the energy of the crowd. It's a great way to connect with fellow fans and celebrate the spirit of college football.

9. Shop Local at the Farmers Market: The Athens Farmers Market is a year-round destination for finding fresh produce, handmade crafts, and other local treasures. But our favorite time to visit is during the fall season, when you can discover seasonal favorites like pumpkins, apples, and sweet potatoes. Make sure to check out the Children's Booth each Saturday for a free, fun, and family-friendly activity!

10. Celebrate National Book Character Day: Dress your child up as their favorite book character and bring their book to school to share with their classmates. It's a wonderful way to encourage a love of reading.

We hope this October bucket list inspires you and your family to create lasting memories. Whether you're xploring your local pumpkin patch, dressing up for book character day, or donating to a charity, there's something for everyone. Let’s embrace the fall season with open arms and create unforgettable experiences together. Grab your cozy sweaters, gather your loved ones, and make this October one for the books!
